Three people died after two helicopters collided midair near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon on Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The collision involved a Robinson R22 and an Airbus helicopter. Both aircraft crashed in a field next to a highway, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities identified a 22-year-old flight instructor from Texas, Maddie Aasbo, who was aboard the Robinson R22. A student pilot from the United Kingdom was also aboard that helicopter. Authorities have not publicly identified the student. They are working with the consulate and the FBI to notify next of kin.
The sole occupant of the Airbus helicopter, Tyler Delane Sturdevant, 38, of Newberg, Oregon, was also killed.
The Robinson R22 was operated by Jerry Trimble Helicopters, a flight training school based at the airport. The company said it is cooperating fully with investigators.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the area.
